Agricultural Technology Information Centre (ATIC) of Indian Institute of Vegetable Research, Varanasi was formally inaugurated by Hon’ble Shri Rajnath Singh, Minister of Agriculture and Food Processing, Govt. of India on 24th January 2004 in the presence of Prof. Mangla Rai, Secretary DARE & DG, ICAR; Prof. G. Kalloo, DDG (Horticulture & Crop Science), ICAR, New Delhi and other dignitaries from ICAR institutes, SAUs, public & private sectors and farmers.

On this occasion, Hon’ble Union Minister said that this is an important platform for both scientists and farmers for rapid dissemination of vegetables varieties and technologies. Dr. Mathura Rai, Director, IIVR, welcoming the dignitaries said, “In this era of information technology access to information, dissemination and adoption or application of various agro-techniques are of paramount importance for a research institute. In vegetables this institute has developed a number of improved varieties and technologies in production and protection, and this ATIC will serve as single window to help farmers and other users to make available all technological information along with technology products for their testing and use.”

National Vegetable Farmers’ Fair was held at Indian Institute of Vegetable Research, Varanasi on 29th and 30th January 2005, in which more than five thousand vegetable growers, agricultural/horticulture/ extension functionaries and people from both private and public sectors from U.P., Bihar, Jharkhand, M.P., Punjab, Orrisa, Uttaranchal and adjoining states had participated. Apart from private agencies, NHB and Banks, thirteen ICAR institutions under Crop Science, Animal Science and Horticultural Division participated and two SAUs organized their exhibition stall depicting their achievements through charts, photographs and live sample for the benefit of the farmers. 

 

On this occasion, Prof. Mangala Rai, Secretary DARE and Director General ICAR, New Delhi, presided over the inaugural function and while addressing the farmers emphasize on agriculture production trend and export. Guest of Honour Prof. G Kalloo, DDG (Horticulture and Crop Science), ICAR, New Delhi while addressing the gathering focused on the use of hybrid seeds in vegetables and other crops and their production at farmers’ level. He also advocated to organize training on Hybrid Seed Production for farmers, farm women and rural youth, so that they not only improve their farming, but also been able to produce hybrid seeds of certain crops at their own field. Dr. Mathura Rai, Director IIVR, Varanasi welcome the dignitaries and address the vegetable growers visited on this occasion appeal them to minimize the use of chemicals in their crops and adopt organic farming.   On this occasion number of eminent scientists from ICAR institutes and SAUs also share their views with the farmers.

The institute organized UPDASP sponsored seven training programme of four days duration on “Nursery Management in Vegetables” from 6th October to 7th November 2003. for the farmers of Uttar Pradesh. In these training programmes 387 farmers from different districts of Uttar Pradesh had participated and learn the advance technologies of nursery management in vegetables, which help them in improving their farming practices. Apart from nursery management, farmers were also exposed to various production and protection technologies

Training and Farmers Meeting on Integrated Pest Management

 

Integrated Pest Management, which is the integration of all suitable management techniques with natural regulating and limiting elements of the environment, is the best alternate option to sustain plant protection in vegetables. Therefore, the institute is organizing regular training and farmers’ meeting on IPM in vegetables to promote the IPM technologies. Apart from separate IPM session in each training programme, four exclusive training programme on IPM in vegetables were organized. In this training programme 140 farmers and officials from State Agriculture/Hort./Protection/Extension Departments were trained trough theoretical and practical orientations

Training for Other State’s Farmers

Regularly farmers from other states are getting benefited by their short visit to this institute but they want to take home more vegetable technologies by attending some training programmes. During 2003-04 five training programmes on “Vegetable Production Technologies” were exclusively organized for the farmers from other states in which farmers from Bihar, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh had participated. In these training programmes 149 farmers were exposed to advanced production and protection technologies of vegetables including nursery management, Seed management and post harvest management.
